The book, Entertainment-Education in Nigerian broadcasting is a chronicle of the influence of the Entertainment-Education (E-E) strategy on the Nigerian broadcast audience. It is a novel attempt at recording remarkable antecedents of pro social and behavioural changes brought about by the E-E strategy from the Nigerian independence till date. Through survey and in depth interview methodologies, it was discovered that E-E programmes abound on the Nigerian broadcast stations (radio and television) under different programme formats. Various pro-social issues are incorporated in these E-E programmes with highly perceived influence on the audience. However, challenges of lack of adequate funding, research, policy and manpower where found to be confronting the use of this effective educational strategy. The book recommends among others that Entertainment-Education programmes should be produced based on audience research, in order to meet specific needs of the broadcast audience. The book is a ready resource material for Entertainment-Education scholars, broadcast managers and producers, as well as policy makers both in Nigeria and the world over.

Forbidden Football in Ceausescu's Romania

This book presents an ethnographic description and sociological interpretation of the 'football gatherings' that evolved out of central Romania in the late twentieth century. In the 1980's, Romanian public television did not broadcast football mega-events for economic and political reasons. In response, masses of people would leave their homes and travel into the mountains to pick-up the TV broadcast from neighbouring countries. The phenomenon grew into a social institution with a penetrating force: it produced an alternative social space and a dissident public that pointed to a form of resistance taking place through football. Forbidden Football in Ceausescu's Romania provides an insight into the everyday life under the pressure of dictatorship and, through the special patterns of sports consumption, it tells a social history through small individual stories related to football.

Seventy-five years after the infamous broadcast, does War of the Worlds still matter? This book answers with a resounding yes ! Contributors revisit the broadcast event in order to reconsider its place as a milestone in media history, and to explore its role as a formative event for understanding citizens' media use in times of crisis. Uniquely focused on the continuities between radio's "new" media moment and our contemporary era of social media, the collection takes War of the Worlds as a starting point for investigating key issues in twenty-first-century communication, including: the problem of misrepresentation in mediated communication, the importance of social context for interpreting communication, and the dynamic role of listeners, viewers and users in talking back to media producers and institutions. By examining the "crisis" moment of the original broadcast in its international, academic, technological, industrial, and historical context, as well as the role of contemporary new media in ongoing "crisis" events, this volume demonstrates the broad, historical link between new media and crisis over the course of a century.
